In honor of Earth Day today, we're offering a 20% off discount on all purchases through Sunday, April 24th in either of our shops, Mouse Trap Vintage and Humpastuff Vintage & Plush. Just use coupon code EARTHDAY2011 at checkout and the discount will be applied to your order. Buying vintage is recycling.

For many years now I have favored buying old things over new whenever possibly, partly because I prefer objects with a certain patina and history, but also because I'd rather not buy disposable, mass-produced products that will eventually end up in a landfill or in a Texas-sized swirling mass of debris in the Pacific Ocean. I don't consider myself to be a very political person, but this is one issue I feel strongly about.

I thought I'd share some photos from the very first Earth Day in 1970, particularly two events in New York City and Washington, D.C. Read more about the history of the movement here:

In honor of Earth Day, Easter and spring(!!!), I'm also planning to do some egg dying with natural dyes like tumeric and hibiscus tea with Beth, my SquidWhale buddy, seeking new vintage for the shop, smelling the of the neighborhood flowers and maybe even buying my very first house plant (plagued with *black thumb*). What are your plans?
